Billie Eilish has announced her surprise role in upcoming Amazon Prime Original series, Swarm.
The captivating thriller co-created by Donald Glover and Janine Nabers will include show-runner Dominique Fishback who crosses paths with Billie’s supporting character.
The series, which premieres on Friday, March 17, centers on a young lady named Dre (Fishback), whose fixation with one of the biggest pop musicians in the world and an unanticipated trauma involving her sister Marissa (Chloe Bailey) send her on a perilous journey across the nation.
Dre runs into characters played by Damson Idris (Khalid, Marisa’s boyfriend), Bryron Bowers, Kiersey Clemons, Paris Jackson, internet star Rickey Thompson, Rory Culkin, and American Auto breakthrough X Mayo as she continues on her increasingly violent path.
That also applies to Eilish, who is seen in a video clip shared on Instagram having a heated discussion with Dre about “milk spilt on the carpet.” The most recent teaser, released by Prime Video on Thursday (March 16), also features Eilish’s character.
The singer-songwriter has starred in a number of music documentaries and provided the voice of a fictionalized version of herself for the Simpsons‘ short film When Billie Met Lisa, but Swarm is the first time the singer is playing a fully developed, scripted role.
Casting director Carmen Cuba, who was aware of the singer’s desire to pursue acting, came up with the idea to include her in the group. In addition to Bailey and Jackson, casting Eilish gave Glover the chance to play up the meta commentary about fandoms and followers.
In an interview with ET regarding the premiere of the show, Nabers responded to the question of what Swarm might be saying about certain stans, such as the Beyhive which the show seems to surround around, “I think you can intellectualize it and say that it’s a critique of fandom, of course.”
She continued, “I created it with someone who is a music superstar, and I’ve seen people take ownership of him in real time, in real life, in front of my face. I think when you step outside, and you look at the story, is it a critique? Sure.”
Nabers said referring to Glover, who has his own successful musical career in addition to producing and starring in TV projects like Atlanta.
Swarm debuts Friday, March 17 on Prime Video.
