The original James T. Kirk on Star Trek was Canadian actor, William Shatner, and although he was born in 1931 he is still healthy and well today. So how does he do it?
William Shatner stays in shape through horseback riding, riding his e-bike, and being active in general. He has also attributed his longevity to the fact that he started working out in his 20s and hasn’t stopped. Shatner doesn’t focus much on his diet saying that because he’s so active he can still enjoy the food he loves.

William Shatner is an Active Guy
In 2018, Shatner did an interview with Jay L. Clendenin of the L.A. Times. In the interview, he talked all about what he had done to stay in shape over the years.
He was asked how he is still creating so much content between his book, a country album, TV, and movies, all at the age of 87. Shatner attributed his desire to make physical fitness a part of his daily routine throughout his entire life.
Shatner goes on to say that since his 20s he was always working out to stay in shape for a role. He did a lot of things like swimming, running, weights, and resistance exercise.
One of the things that a lot of people were interested to learn about is that William Shatner uses horseback riding as one of his main methods for staying in shape. He told Clendenin that he took up horseback riding when he was 40 years old.
When he was asked how exactly horseback riding was a way to stay in shape, Shatner elaborated.
He said that “People don’t realize it, but you’re not just passively sitting there on a horse. Riding is a stretching and strengthening exercise. It requires balance, expertise, finesse, and strength.”
William Shatner went on to say that he rides in a competitive manner so it really does give his body a huge workout. He was also asked what he recommends other elderly people do to keep their balance and stay fit.
His advice: get an electrical bicycle. Shatner now rides his e-bike everywhere and invested in buying 15 bikes for his entire family so that they can ride around with him.
He even told NBC News that he and his family have an electronic bicycle gang now and they’ll all ride their bikes to go to dinner together. Shatner also said that riding his electric trike allows him to be more social within his neighborhood.

Shatner’s Other Healthy Activities
William Shatner hasn’t only been big on staying physically active his entire life, he has mentioned that there are other things he does for overall health. However, one of those things is not monitoring his diet as you would think.
On the Dr. Oz website, they reported that Shatner has been adamant about learning how to use new technology despite his age. This is important because according to recent studies, learning new things helps keep you mentally younger.
Dr. Oz also reported that William Shatner is still very active in the bedroom citing that being intimate in the bedroom is a key to living a healthier longer life. He also focuses on maintaining healthy friendships and being social.
William Shatner’s Health Scare
In 2016, William Shatner had a big-time health scare after his doctor performed a blood test to check his prostate health.
In an interview with Today, he said that he had been taking testosterone supplements when he went in to have his blood test performed. His reading had changed drastically and his doctor informed him that they thought he had prostate cancer.
Shatner told hosts that he had always been afraid of dying but being told that he probably had prostate cancer was a shock. He said that he sat listening to the list of symptoms and prognosis cancer sufferers could experience and was shocked.
However, he stopped taking the testosterone supplements and his reading went back to normal. This didn’t stop him from really appreciating his life and continuing to live it to the fullest though.
