Mike Schmidt studied at Fairview High School located in Dayton, Ohio, and graduated in 1967.

He then enrolled at Ohio University (sometimes referred to as OU), a public research university situated in Athens, Ohio. There, he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity as well as led the Ohio Bobcats baseball team to the College World Series in 1970, and was selected as the shortstop for the 1970 College Baseball All-America Team.

  • In the 1971 Major League Baseball draft, he was picked by the Philadelphia Phillies in the second round (30th overall). He was subsequently signed by Phillies scout Tony Lucadello on June 11, 1971. Reportedly, Tony had followed Mike since he played Little League Baseball.
  • On June 17, 1971, Mike Schmidt made his professional debut in an exhibition game between the Philadelphia Phillies and their Double-A affiliate the Reading Phillies in Reading, Pennsylvania.
