I find it hard to believe sometimes that Miley Cyrus and I are the same age, 30. I feel like she’s both younger and older than that. I think she can be immature sometimes but has also experienced so much for her age, having been a child star. Honestly I did not get the hype around the song “Flowers,” it is so bland to me. But I can’t deny it’s been a smash, and it dovetails nicely into her work with Gucci fragrances. She’s been a spokesperson for the Gucci Flora fragrances since 2021, and she was interviewed by Harpers Bazaar to promote the launch of Flora Gorgeous Magnolia, a new perfume. It’s a fluff piece but she name drops her godmother Dolly Parton a couple of times and also talks about how she’s always wanted to smell like her mom or her grandmother. They open the interview by asking her what song of hers reminds her of this scent. Of course she’s going to pick “Flowers.” Now I’m surprised they didn’t do a sponcon type of thing for the music video. You know someone in a marketing meeting had the idea.

Who is the best-smelling person you’ve ever met? What did they smell like?
My grandmother and Dolly Parton. They both smell like home to me.

If your friends and family members were asked to describe your signature scent in one word, what do you think it would be?
Subtle. I have a very loud presence, so I keep my surroundings subtle, so my personality can shine and nothing speaks for me.

When did you start experimenting with fragrance? What was the first scent you ever wore, and have you smelled it lately?
My mom always smelled like candy and cakes, so I just have copied her my entire life. I am becoming my mother in a very sweet and scary way.

What scent always makes you feel nostalgic? And how has your scent style changed over the years?
The smell of baby powder and flowers always reminds me of my grandmother. It’s such a blessing to have our senses be able to keep us with people even after they’ve passed.

What’s the biggest beauty risk you’ve ever taken? Do you have any regrets?
Cutting my hair short, and it was absolutely worth the risk. I felt so powerful and unique.

If you were to gift Gucci Flora Gorgeous Magnolia to just one person, who would that be and why?
Dolly Parton, because I know she loves anything super feminine and sexy.

[From Harper Bazaar]

I believe that Dolly Parton always smells good, and the thing is, I don’t think she’s wearing super expensive perfume. That doesn’t seem like Dolly’s style. I appreciated Miley’s self awareness when she described herself as a “loud presence” because she is. She’s attention-seeking, no matter what she says to the contrary. But “subtle” doesn’t sound like Gucci, so I doubt that she’s wearing their perfumes on a daily basis. There’s also something about Tish Cyrus smelling of “candy and cakes” that intuitively tracks. Those gourmand type fragrances were popular in the nineties when Miley was growing up. I wonder what she means about becoming just like her mom, but I guess it’s inevitable for most of us. I just hope Miley doesn’t end up in the same kind of off-and-on relationship that Tish was in with Billy Ray–I hope she doesn’t inherit that pattern. When it comes to fragrances, I wear men’s cologne or unisex scents (and men’s deodorant) because I can’t stand powdery or sweet scents. The worst is white florals–gardenia, lily, magnolia, etc–they give me instant headaches. Gucci Gorgeous Magnolia sounds like headache central to me but it also has patchouli in it, so I could see Miley wearing it.
